WHAT IS A CSA?

COMMUNITY-SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA), an arrangement whereby customers pay growers in advance of the growing season for a guaranteed share of the season’s harvest.  These pre payments help us purchase seed, equipment, lease payments, labor, supplies etc. which are needed to produce our membership shares.  We plan and work throughout the year to provide our members with an equal share of produce throughout the 20 week growing season.

We believe in living closer to the land.  Craig grew up farming and operated a 400-acre farm in western Minnesota until he was 27.  We plan for a mix of native plantings for beauty and wildlife support alongside the cultivated production gardens.  We continually improve our soil by the addition of organic materials and minimum use of tillage equipment.  Our only use of chemicals is for the control of invasive plants that were brought on to the property by previous owners.  We attended an invasive seminar offered by the Boone County extension office in October of 2006 which provided identification tools and proper chemical control.  We advocate and practice sustainable gardening methods; however, we are not currently seeking organic certification.  All weeding and mulching is done by hand in addition to harvesting, processing and packaging.

WHAT WILL MEMBERS RECEIVE?

You will receive on average 6 to 8 different types of vegetables each week.  Our farm grows many different varieties of each vegetable; however, production is always dependent upon the weather.  Since we specialize in heirloom vegetables our yields are not as robust as hybrid varieties and appearance will be different than what members are accustomed to seeing in the store or at other direct retail farmers’ markets since many are very rare and the seed is not commercially available except through membership with seed saving organizations.  The flavors of the vegetables are exceptional and members will taste this difference.

SPRING (April-June) heirloom asparagus, heirloom lettuce, baby greens, heirloom radish, heirloom beets, heirloom kale, heirloom carrots, heirloom chard, spinach, lettuce mixes, Asian greens and herbs.  It’s the season for greens.

SUMMER (July-September) heirloom cucumbers, haricot vert beans (French beans for fresh eating only), heirloom summer squash, heirloom  winter squash, heirloom fingerling potatoes, heirloom all blue blue potatoes, heirloom purple Viking potatoes, heirloom tomatoes, peppers, heirloom eggplant, heirloom ground cherries (husk tomatoes), heirloom melons, heirloom watermelons, garlic and herbs.

WHAT IS THE COST?

WHAT IF I’M OUT OF TOWN ONE WEEK?

Let us know ahead of time so we can arrange for donation or you find someone who is able to take your share.

HOW DO I PURCHASE AN ADD ON?

Let us know 1 week prior to your weekly share delivery or pick up that you are interested in an add on so we can prepare for that additional item in our weekly planning.  You will be charged at time of order either through our Product Availability page which links to our Square store for additional details and specific pricing

for that add on or over the phone with a credit card will be accepted for payment.  We are currently accepting VISA, MasterCard, Discover Card and American Express for your convenience.

WAITING LIST

Each season is planned in advance and there is limited space available.  Membership is available on a first come first serve basis until all shares have been sold.  If a farm membership is full at the time you send your application and membership fee, we can return your check or hold it for the first available space.  If you miss the SPRING/SUMMER CSA we will be offering a FALL/WINTER CSA this year since we are able to grow year round utilizing high tunnels, low tunnels and planning for late summer/early fall cole crop planting.  If it looks like no opening will occur for the current offering the check and application will be returned.  Don’t forget that you can purchase any add on item through our website, meadowviewfarmandgarden.com, Product Availability page which is linked to our Square Online Store.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT IN MY SHARE?

Product Availability page will have what is currently being harvested and corresponding price for what will be available in that weeks half or full share.  Recipes are available through Pinterest or Recipes web page.  Facebook postings will keep you current on farm happenings, product, recipe links and food related content.
